There are a lot of ways in which we can help and support our friends and family through grief. Being able to support your loved ones probably comes easier to those who have been through grief themselves, however, if this is your first time, there are many things that you can do to help. It’s good to keep in mind that everyone processes these feelings differently, and what works for some may not work for others. We offer cremation services in Orlando, FL, and are always more than happy to help in any way that we can. Reach out today with any questions and continue on for more tips and suggestions!

Avoid Avoiding

Instinctively, when we notice a loved one going through a difficult time and grieving, we may think it best to keep our distance, however, we highly advise against this. Grief alone can cause people to feel isolated, so it’s best to show that you are there for support through this difficult time. Whether you prefer to text, call, email, or write a letter, any form of contact will be much appreciated and demonstrate your willingness to lend a helping hand when needed. Also, if you are at a loss for the right words to say when you see your loved one, a simple “I’m sorry” can go a long way.

Share Your Own Grief

Contrary to what you may believe, sharing stories of your own struggles through past grief can actually be very beneficial to whoever is currently grieving. When we share stories of similar struggles, it can offer hope to those currently struggling. When someone is going through these difficult feelings, life can feel bleak, hopeless, and even pointless, so similar stories of surviving grief can offer a light at the end of a very dark tunnel.

Welcome all Emotions

A key thing to remember when we are supporting someone through their grief is that we want to allow and make space for any and all emotions they may be feeling. This means that if your friend or relative is weeping inconsolably, it is perfectly okay to allow this and remain silent through this moment. Attempting to hush or redirect their emotions can make it seem as though what they are feeling and expressing is not okay, and we do not want to give off this impression. All emotions should be welcomed, and you should be the person who is able to be a support during this time.

Avoid Religion

This is a very important lesson to be learned for those who will support friends and loved ones through grief. It is crucial that you avoid any topics of religion when trying to help someone who is grieving. It is not helpful to your loved one to hear things such as, “They are in a better place now” especially if they’ve never expressed any interest or hints at being religious. Additionally, if you are sure of their religious beliefs, it’s still best to avoid this talk as it isn’t very helpful at the moment.

Supporting a loved one through grief can be tricky, so we hope that our suggestions were able to help you better support. Whenever you are looking for cremation services in Orlando, FL we hope that you will reach out to us for support. We are here for you!
