On top of dealing with the loss of a close friend or relative, oftentimes, the last thing we think about is what we plan on wearing to the funeral. Funerals vary across different cultures, so it’s important to remember that dress codes and colors may greatly differ depending on who and where you are mourning. We’ve all been taught to wear traditional black clothing, but interestingly enough, things are continuing to shift in what people are welcoming in various services. We offer cremation services in Orlando, FL and our goal is to help you dress accordingly for the next time you find yourself at a funeral.

Dress Conservatively

Whether you are a man or woman, it is a good idea that you strive to dress as appropriately as possible for whichever funeral service you are attending. This means that cocktail dresses, even if they are black, are probably not in good taste. Remember, this is a time where people are coming together to mourn the loss of life, so it’s in good taste to arrive respectfully.

Keep Away from Vibrant Colors

Again, we don’t want to make a statement, it simply is not the occasion for that. Our outfit on the day of a funeral should reflect the solemness of the service. If you don’t wish to wear black, then opt for any neutral color that won’t draw too much attention to yourself. Additionally, be sure to avoid any loud or distracting patterns.

Comfort Over Fashion

Although it’s probably not something that immediately comes to mind, a funeral actually requires a lot of its attendees. Services can run longer than you may expect, so it’s a good idea to wear clothing and shoes that are comfortable. Funerals oftentimes require a lot of sitting, standing, walking, and kneeling so if you choose heels that day, you might go home a little sore. Be sure to plan ahead of time and dress as comfortably as possible so that you can pay your respects with a clear head.

Minimize Jewelry

Before we get scolded for this, we are not suggesting that jewelry isn’t appropriate for a funeral. Keeping your jewelry to a minimum, however, is probably in better taste. Flashy jewelry can cause unwanted attention and send the wrong message. Remember this is a somber occasion, so anything flashy may come off to the other mourners as extremely disrespectful.

The last thing we want you to feel while preparing for a funeral service is stressed. It’s important that you feel confident and comfortable in what you are wearing, and it’s also important that you are entering the place of mourning as respectfully as possible. Remember to avoid appearing flashy and to opt for neutral colors that won’t call unnecessary attention to yourself.
